Bio

Joy Spence is Counsel to the firm’s Business & Real Estate Taxation, Trusts & Estates, Tax Exempt Organizations and Private Wealth & Taxation Practice Groups. She focuses her practice primarily on federal and state tax law, trusts and estates, charitable planning and exempt organizations. Joy regularly assists clients in developing tailored plans to maximize asset protection and wealth preservation, while minimizing tax exposure. She also counsels individuals, families and business owners on developing tax-efficient structures and intra-generational wealth transfer strategies for estate, charitable, and business succession planning needs.

Joy regularly advises on charitable planning and tax-exempt organizations, with a special focus on the income tax planning, reporting compliance and IRS controversy resolution associated with charitable giving. She also advises tax-exempt organizations and their boards on their structuring, governance and operations, including permissible activities and advice on investment and divestment of assets and joint ventures to navigate around complex tax-exempt compliance issues to minimize or avoid unrelated business taxable income and excise taxes

She earned a B.S. in Communications from Appalachian State University; a J.D. from Florida International University College of Law, and an LL.M. in Estate Planning from the University of Miami School of Law.
