Summer Associate Program

The Summer Associate Program at Meltzer, Lippe, Goldstein & Breitstone, LLP is a ten week program designed to provide law students the opportunity to learn directly from our attorneys in our Long Island and New York City offices. We pride ourselves on providing Summer Associates with real-world exposure to our matters, clients, and firm.

Under the supervision of experienced attorneys, our Summer Associates make meaningful contributions to ongoing cases, transactions and other legal matters. Our Summer Associates are exposed to various areas of the law and have the opportunity to attend department meetings, closings, depositions, trials and negotiations. In addition, our Summer Associates are provided with networking opportunities, one-on-one time with senior partners, and significant drafting assignments.

We take pride in providing our Summer Associates with a wide variety of interesting and challenging assignments and experiences that reflect the day-to-day practice of law.  From drafting transactional documents in connection with a corporate or real estate deal, to assisting with estate planning matters, to preparing for and attending fast-paced depositions and trials, by the end of the program, our Summer Associates have gained practical experiences that will prepare them for their careers.

Summer Associates also participate in multi-session clinics presented by various practice groups at the firm which provides you with a comprehensive overview of the practice area and may assist you in determining the area of law you want to pursue after graduation.

Representative Assignments
  • Preparing shareholder agreements and related corporate documents.
  • Drafting motions to dismiss and motions for summary judgments.
  • Analyzing collective bargaining agreements and related labor documents.
  • Drafting estate planning documents, including wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and health care proxies.
  • Drafting discovery demands, analyzing document productions, and preparing deposition outlines.
Mentoring and Feedback

Each Summer Associate is assigned a mentor who introduces Summer Associates to the firm’s culture, provides guidance about assignments, and helps them to connect with other attorneys at the firm. The program also includes mid-summer and end-of-summer evaluations that provide valuable feedback on the Summer Associate’s assignments from the various attorneys they work with during the summer.

Social Events

Meltzer Lippe provides the opportunity for Summer Associates to interact and stay in close contact with their associate and partner colleagues in an informal setting. We sponsor a variety of events throughout the summer, including luncheons, happy hours, premier New York sporting and cultural events, and trips to Long Island’s East End.

Summer Associate Perspectives

“My main takeaway from the summer program at Meltzer Lippe was not only the depth of the program but its breadth. Meltzer Lippe is a full service firm and as a summer associate I got meaningful experience in each and every department. The possibility to explore different areas of the law, foster great mentorships and relationships and connect with some truly awesome people really differentiates Meltzer Lippe’s program from any other.” Thomas Waldron, Columbia Law School, 2017 Summer Associate

“I am immensely fortunate to have been a Summer Associate at Meltzer Lippe. Meltzer Lippe gave me the opportunity to take on meaningful work and to have real mentorship in doing so. From forming meaningful relationships with my colleagues to gaining exposure to practical approaches to legal practice, my time in Meltzer Lippe’s Summer Program helped shape who I am as an attorney to this day.” Adam Wald, Boston University Law School, 2018 Summer Associate

“I thoroughly enjoyed my experience in MLGB’s summer associate program, and was able to learn a lot about the firm’s different practice groups to find which practice I wanted to join as an attorney. It was a valuable experience to work directly with the firm’s partners, and to gain practical skills that were not taught in law school. I joined MLGB’s Trusts & Estates, Private Wealth & Taxation and Tax Exempt Organizations Practice Groups immediately after the summer associate program, and am very happy to report that I am now an attorney in these practice groups! I definitely owe the jumpstart to my career to MLGB’s summer associate program, and am sure it will be amazing for future summer associates also.”Elliot Dizon, Brooklyn Law School, 2019 Summer Associate

“I had the privilege to work at Meltzer Lippe as a summer associate during the summer of 2020. During such an uncertain time in the world and in the legal profession, Meltzer Lippe made the firm feel like home by ensuring face time (well, Zoom time) with equity partners and associates in different fields, and by providing me with challenging and rewarding work. After seeing the efforts made by the firm to ensure a meaningful summer associate program, it made my decision to join the team as a full time associate a no brainer.”Nicole Witte, Albany Law School, 2020 Summer Associate

“As a summer associate, I felt fortunate to have been given the flexibility to work in the areas of practice I was most interested in and learn from extremely bright partners and associates. I was treated as a colleague and, as such, felt even more motivated to learn quickly and improve through the detailed, critical feedback I received.”Joshua Ashkenazy, St. John’s Law School, 2022 Summer Associate

“Out of everyone I spoke with regarding their summer associate experiences, my experience at Meltzer Lippe was by far the best summer anyone had. Meltzer Lippe presented a balanced summer where I was constantly busy with interesting and substantive work as well as forming meaningful connections with the partners and associates in the firm.”David Katzman, Cardozo School of Law, 2022 Summer Associate

“During my time as a summer associate at Meltzer, I was fortunate to work on challenging assignments alongside brilliant partners and associates from various legal departments, enabling me to identify my preferred practice areas. In addition to the fulfilling legal work, I enjoyed the various social events including a boat ride, Mets game, bowling, and a winery visit! The Firm’s welcoming environment made me feel valued and excited about beginning my career at Meltzer.”Katarina Thallner, Brooklyn Law School, 2022 Summer Associate
