Jerome M. Hesch, Counsel to the firm’s Business & Real Estate Taxation, Trusts & Estates, Tax Exempt Organizations and Private Wealth & Taxation Practice Groups will be a speaker at the American Bar Association 2024 May Tax Meeting on Saturday, May 4, 2024 in Washington, DC. Jerome will present “Communicating Estate Planning Proposals Using Financial Modeling.”

Financial modeling using numerical spreadsheets explains how valuation discounts, financial leverage, the freeze, and the grantor’s payment of the income taxes on the grantor trust’s income all work together to shift value over one’s life. Spreadsheets allow the client to consider when the grantor’s payment of the income taxes on the grantor trust’s income should be reduced or eliminated. The materials discuss alternatives that can reduce the grantor’s income tax obligation on the grantor trust’s income.

Participants will learn:

  • How to communicate the tax savings of an estate planning proposal in an understandable manner.
  • Why using spreadsheet illustrations provides a client with the opportunity to participate in the financial design of the estate plan.
  • How to design the plan to deal with the grantor’s obligation to pay the income taxes on a grantor trust’s income.
