Bio

Jeffrey A. Galant is Counsel to the firm’s Business & Real Estate Taxation, Trusts & Estates, Tax Exempt Organizations and Private Wealth & Taxation Practice Groups. Jeffrey has more than 30 years of experience in tax, trusts and estates, and tax-exempt organizations law. Jeffrey has extensive experience in sophisticated tax and estate planning matters involving family owned and other privately owned enterprises including operating businesses, investment vehicles and family foundations. Furthermore, he is very experienced with the tax and estate planning issues that concern artists and collectors. Jeffrey was named 2013, 2014 and 2017 “Lawyer of the Year” by Best Lawyers, an honor based on exhaustive peer-review assessments and reflective of the high level of respect a lawyer has earned among other leading lawyers in the same communities and the same practice areas for their abilities, their professionalism, and their integrity.

He handles complex matters such as the restructuring and reorganization of businesses and tax exempt entities, and planning for ownership and management succession in family businesses. Jeffrey advises business owners in connection with the sale of their businesses and in the acquisition of new businesses. He also provides estate planning advice to business owners and other high net worth individuals, and handles estate matters, representing either the executors and trustees (including institutional fiduciaries) or the beneficiaries.

Jeffrey is an adjunct professor of taxation at New York University’s School of Continuing and Professional Education where, in addition to taxation, he teaches a course on business succession planning. As a guest lecturer he has taught advance estate planning at New York Law School, and succession planning in family businesses at the graduate business schools of New York University and Fordham University. He has written numerous articles on taxation and charitable organizations. Jeffrey received his Bachelors of Science from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, Juris Doctor from Columbia University Law School and an LL.M. in Tax from New York University Law School. In addition to the American, New York State and New York City Bar Associations, Jeffrey is a member of The Florida Bar, the Federal Bar Council, the Attorneys for Family-Held Enterprises, Inc. (AHFE), The Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP), The Family Firm Institute (FFI) and The ESOP Association, and he is a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC).
